Enagas Renovable, Verbund partner green H2 projects in Spain

Spanish renewable gas company Enagas Renovable and Verbund Green Hydrogen GmbH, a unit of Austrian utility Verbund AG, have signed a memorandum of understanding, outlining their plan to develop green hydrogen projects in Spain, a press release announced on Monday.

The goal of the partnership is to produce hydrogen for difficult-to-decarbonise sectors in Europe, Enagas Renovable said in the announcement.

As partners, the companies will focus on large-scale green hydrogen projects in areas of Spain with high wind and solar power potential. This will allow them to produce large volumes of low-cost hydrogen, which will be exported to the European Union via the H2Med hydrogen pipeline and the European Hydrogen Backbone, Enagas Renovable said.

Enagas Renovable is the green arm of Spanish gas transmission system operator Enagas SA. Enagas is involved in both H2Med and the European Hydrogen Backbone multi-country cross-border projects.

“The Spanish market plays an important role in the growth of our hydrogen business, not only to advance local hydrogen production in Spain but also to develop import routes to Central Europe,” commented Michael Strugl, CEO of Verbund AG. “This cooperation will leverage our joint activities in the Spanish market and stimulate the development of trans-European hydrogen infrastructure to enable large-scale supply of green hydrogen on the continent.” (July 22, 2024)
